Welcome to J.L. Johnson Knives

My goal is always to produce a knife that is high performance in the field while easy and comfortable in the hand. I also want my knives to be pleasant to look at and, to that end I use embellishments such as file work and engraving. The handle material I prefer is a natural material, such as wood, sheep horn, buffalo horn, stag, whitetail and mammoth tooth ivory.

I was interested in knife making long before I had a chance to begin. I am self-taught, but was heavily influenced by the book How to Make Knives by David Boye. With that book in hand, I began to make knives in 1991 and have pursued the craft and refined my techniques ever since. Other influences include R.W. Loveless who deeply impressed me with the drop point design. Terry Knipshield and Ed Linhardt are two local makers who have helped me greatly with time and advice.

I recently completed a long-term goal of mine to become a member of the Knifemaker’s Guild and, in the process, won the Fraser Museum Best of Show Award at the last show in Louisville, Kentucky in September 2011.
